Aquaman is now officially DC’s highest grossing movie ever, reeling in over $1.1 billion and counting worldwide. So it comes as no surprise to learn that Warner Bros. is interested in diving back into the fabled oceans of Atlantean lore.
What is surprising, however, is that there are currently no serious discussions going on over at WB regarding a direct sequel, this according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Instead, the studio has tapped new screenwriters Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald to pen the script to a spinoff film based around The Trench, the hoard of ugly sea-dwelling monstrosities that can be seen attacking Arthur and Mera in the Aquaman film. Details are currently spares; however, THR is reporting that the project will have a horror twinge to it and that it will not feature the main Aquaman cast.
What do you think of this news? Are you surprised to learn that WB is not currently working on a direct Aquaman sequel, given the film’s success? And would you go see a The Trench spinoff? I would love to hear your thoughts, so hit me up in the comments below!
