Alien has been one of the most persistent entertainment franchises out there since it landed in theaters back in 1979. It has been in the news a lot recently following the launch of the mobile game Alien: Blackout and now we are talking about it again thanks to Aliens director James Cameron.

The Titanic and Avatar director spoke to IGN (via Bloody Disgusting) while strolling the red carpet for his upcoming picture Alita: Battle Angel. The outlet jokingly asked James Cameron to give Neill Blomkamp (District 9, Elysium) a call about his dead Alien 5 film, to which the filmmaker replied:

““I’m working on that, yeah.”

Neill Blomkamp was originally tapped by 20th Century Fox to helm Alien 5, which would have served as a direct sequel to Cameron’s Aliens; however, the studio quickly killed off that project for original Alien director Ridley Scott’s vision following the success of The Martian.

Granted, this is nothing concrete. Even if James Cameron does get something going, there would not be any forward momentum on the project until at least 20th Century Fox’s merger with Disney is completed. Still, it is a little exciting for fans to hear that the most successful filmmaker of all time is planning his return to the popular IP.

What do you make of this news? Does it excite you to hear that James Cameron plans on returning to the iconic series? Would you be interested in a Neill Blomkamp Alien film? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!
