A television show based on the DC Comics series Swamp Thing was announced over a year ago when the DC Universe app was first announced. Finally, after months of speculation, we finally know when the series will drop on the DC streaming app.
It was made known at Wonder Con this weekend (via Bloody Disgusting) that Swamp Thing will debut on the DC Universe app May 31st of this year. James Wan (The Conjuring, Aquaman) is producing.
The series stars Derek Mears at the title character with Jennifer Beals, Virginia Madsen, Ian Ziering, Will Patton, Andy Bean, Crystal Reed, Kevin Durand, Henderson Wade, Jeryl Prescott and Maria Sten.
Check out the synopsis:
“Swamp Thing” centers on CDC researcher Abby Arcane (Reed). When she returns to her childhood home of Houma, Louisiana, in order to investigate a deadly swamp-borne virus, she develops a surprising bond with scientist Alec Holland — only to have him tragically taken from her. But as powerful forces descend on Houma, intent on exploiting the swamp’s mysterious properties for their own purposes, Abby will discover that the swamp holds mystical secrets, both horrifying and wondrous — and the potential love of her life may not be dead after all.
Swamp Thing is based on DC characters created by Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson, is written by “Ash vs. Evil Dead” writer Mark Verheiden and IT co-writer Gary Dauberman.
Fans of the source material will be excited to learn that the series aiming to be scary, with rated “R” violent, and will be primarily based in Alan Moore’s run. The creature will exist as a practical creature suit.
Swamp Thing was previously adapted, albeit loosely, into a feature film back in 1982 from A Nightmare On Elm Street and Scream director Wes Craven.
