With an A+ CinemaScore and a 94% on Rotten Tomatoes, it’s safe to say both audiences and critics are pleased with Incredibles 2. After this weekend, executives of the Mouse House are sure to be too.
According to Box Office Mojo, the much-anticipated Pixar sequel has swiped the title for best opening weekend for an animated film, sucking up an estimated $180 million. It ripped the record from the forgetful fins of FindingDory, another Pixar fare, which previously stood at number one with $135 million. On Friday alone Incredibles 2 earned over $71 million, making it the best opening-day for an animated film ever, another privilege previously toted by Finding Dory at $54 million.
The records don’t stop there. $180 million also gives Incredibles 2 the eighth biggest box office opening of all time. That’s of any film in any genre. It also means that of the top ten opening weekends, Disney owns nine of them, Jurassic World being the odd man out.
