It seems MGM is looking to make the first major acquisition of 2021. Per Deadline, the studio is nearing a deal to nab Adrift. The project is being described as a supernatural thriller from The Ring scribe Koji Suzuki. Jared Leto is attached to star in the picture while Darren Aronofsky is set to direct. Jason Blum of Blumhouse will produce.
The report states that Leto and producing partner Emma Ludbrook are also looking to produce via their production company Paradox, after a decades-long struggle to secure the rights.
The story is set in the dead calm of the open sea, where a fishing boat discovers an abandoned yacht with a strange distress call. A deckhand agrees to take lone control of it while it’s towed into port, but soon he discovers why the rest of his more experienced crew members call it a “Ghost Ship.”
Aronofsky and Luke Dawson will be co-penning the script, which has yet to be written.
There is no word on when production would start on the feature. Scheduling still needs to be worked out. Next up, Aronofsky is eyeing A24’s The Whale, which he will shoot this March. Meanwhile, Leto has his work cut out for him with Ridley Scott’s Gucci followed by the Apple TV+ series WeCrashed, which the network just picked up this morning.
