Spyglass Media Group announced today its first project since launching back in March. According to Deadline, the production company is fast-tracking a re-imagining of Clive Barker’s 1987 body horror standard Hellraiser with David S. Goyer attached to write and produce.

Clive Barker wrote and directed the original Hellraiser, which was based on Barker’s own novella The Hellbound Heart. The story centers around a love triangle involving a married couple and the husband’s brother, who unleashes sadomasochistic Hell spawns called Cenobites, which are lead by Pinhead (who is the face of the Hellraiser series). Over the years, Hellraiser spawned nine sequels, graphic novels and loads of merchandise.

Regarding news of the reboot, Goyer said in a statement:

“I’ve been a fan of Clive’s work since the original Books of Blood paperbacks and The Hellbound Heart novella. Having the chance to reimagine Pinhead and the Cenobites for a new audience is a nightmare-come-true. Gary [Chairman and CEO of Spyglass] is a true fan as well and we’re committed to making something dark and visceral.”

Goyer previously served as a co-writer on Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy and write Marvel’s Blade trilogy.

We’ll see if this Hellraiser reboot actually ends up taking off. For years there have been rumors and speculation about rebooting the franchise. And every time we just end up with another straight-to-video sequel. I guess only time will tell.
