This April may not be stacked to the brim with high-profile blockbusters like March, but don’t sleep on this month’s movies. There are still plenty of diverse offerings to be had in the coming weeks, including potential Oscar contenders like Ben Affleck’s Air and Ari Aster’s Beau is Afraid, which features Joaquin Phoenix’s first appearance on screen since his Academy Award-winning bow in 2019’s Joker.
There’s also Illumination’s take on the Mushroom Kingdom, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which is guaranteed to be one of the biggest films at the 2023 box office. Meanwhile, fans of fright will be able to sink their teeth into Renfield, featuring Nicolas Cage’s take on Dracula, and Evil Dead Rise, the latest entry in the largely successful cult series.

PAINT – APRIL 7
Synopsis: Owen Wilson portrays Carl Nargle, Vermont’s #1 public television painter who is convinced he has it all: a signature perm, custom van, and fans hanging on his every stroke… until a younger, better artist steals everything (and everyone) Carl loves.
THE POPE’S EXORCIST – APRIL 14
Synopsis: Inspired by the actual files of Father Gabriele Amorth, Chief Exorcist of the Vatican, The Pope’s Exorcist follows Amorth as he investigates a young boy’s terrifying possession and ends up uncovering a centuries-old conspiracy the Vatican has desperately tried to keep hidden.
RENFIELD – APRIL 14
Synopsis: Renfield, Dracula’s henchman and inmate at the lunatic asylum for decades, longs for a life away from the Count, his various demands, and all of the bloodshed that comes with them.
MAFIA MAMA – APRIL 14
Synopsis: An American mom inherits her grandfather’s mafia empire in Italy. Guided by the firm’s consigliere, she hilariously defies everyone’s expectations as the new head of the family business.
GUY RITCHIE’S THE COVENANT – APRIL 21
Synopsis: Follows US Army Sergeant John Kinley (Jake Gyllenhaal) and Afghan interpreter Ahmed (Dar Salim).
EVIL DEAD RISE – APRIL 21
Synopsis: A twisted tale of two estranged sisters whose reunion is cut short by the rise of flesh-possessing demons, thrusting them into a primal battle for survival as they face the most nightmarish version of family imaginable.
BEAU IS AFRAID – APRIL 21
Synopsis: Following the sudden death of his mother, a mild-mannered but anxiety-ridden man confronts his darkest fears as he embarks on an epic, Kafkaesque odyssey back home.
ARE YOU THERE, GOD? IT’S ME, MARGARET – APRIL 28
Synopsis: When her family moves from the city to the suburbs, 11-year-old Margaret navigates new friends, feelings, and the beginning of adolescence.
BIG GEORGE FOREMAN: THE MIRACULOUS STORY OF THE ONCE AND FUTURE HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION OF THE WORLD – APRIL 28
