2020 was a horrible, awful, no good year. Nobody was safe from its treacherous grasp. Even our entertainment was impacted on a significant level. Nearly every anticipated movie of the year was pushed off into 2021, at the earliest, because of the COVID pandemic. And it was a smart movie by the studios because movies were, for the most part, the furthest thing from peoples’ minds. The result is an everlasting asterisk-shaped scar next to the 2020 release calendar. Because of this, I feel that any sort of official “Best of 2020” list just would not make sense.
What I’ve decided to do instead, is break down all the movies I did get a chance to sit down and see into three categories: my favorites, my guilty pleasures, and the garbage. Because so many of the planned movies didn’t actually hit screens this year, what we are left with likely wouldn’t have landed in the spots that they ultimately found themselves in due to the new lack of competition. It’s a much broader approach than we’re used to and much less entertaining than I’d like, but at least I can communicate in some fashion my thoughts on the content that did stick around for the year and wind up in my eyeballs. Now without further ado, here is my general breakdown of the films I saw in 2020:
