A television series adaptation of Clive Barker’s horror/fantasy flick Nightbreed has been in the works for some time. Now there finally seems to be movement on the project. While speaking with ComingSoon, Barker himself let it be known that Trick ‘r Treat and Godzilla: King of the Monsters filmmaker Michael Dougherty will be directing the show.
“It’s exciting, after 30 years, to go back to these characters and find out who’s still speaking to me, who wants their story told,” Barker told the site. “My tongue isn’t in my cheek when I say that as when I start a piece, it’s listening. The writing is a piece of listening, I’ve always said I was a journalist and what I was reporting on was the space between my ears.”
Barker is still developing the “Bible” for the show, the site points out.
As for the original Nightbreed, Barker wrote and directed it himself, adapting it from his own novel Cabal. Unfortunately, the film was considered a box office failure when it released back in 1990.
Interestingly, Dougherty is also currently working on HBO’s series adaptation of Clive Barker’s Hellraiser.
What do you make of this story? Will you be tuning into Nightbreed once it finally hits the small screen? Were you even a fan of the original film or novel? Sound off in the comments below and let me and the rest of the movie loving world know your thoughts!
I absolutely love Michael Dougherty. Trick r’ Treat and Krampus are some of my favorite movies. He knows how to make great characters and deliver beautiful tone and atmosphere. However I have never been a fan of Nightbreed. I just can’t get into it. But with Dougherty making this then I will give it a shot.

I am not a big fan of Nightbreed, either. But I agree about Dougherty tackling this series. It’s at least going to be worth a look once it comes out! 😀

Yea, Nightbreed is a movie that is a hate or love kind of deal. I like the idea of it but absolutely hate how its presented. I think a real good development of Midian and its people would be cool. I felt that Barkers depictions were too limited, especially for a full length film.
