The 92nd Academy Awards are this Sunday night, which makes now the perfect time for movie lovers around the world to celebrate the films and accomplishments of 2019.
Personally, the Oscars are one of my favorite events of the year. Though I typically understand why the voting body of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences collectively pick the films and filmmakers that they do, I still can’t escape the thought of what it’d look like if I were the sole decider of the most prestigious awards in Hollywood. That’s where the Jordies come in!
For the second year in a row, I have gone through the hundreds of films I saw in a single calendar year and nominated the very best ones for different categories that I deem either important to the craft of filmmaking or simple fun. Most of the categories you’ll see below are ones you’ll find at the Academy Awards. Others are ones I think the Academy should add or of my own taste.
I like to mention each year that though I tend to see almost every major release of any given year, I still haven’t gotten around to all of them. If you notice the lack of a major awards contender, then that’s likely because I didn’t get around to that particular film yet. Or maybe I just didn’t like it as much as everyone else. Who know!
