As if The Batman cast wasn’t already stacked with unexpectedly prestigious picks, director Matt Reeves has gone and cast John Turturro as Gotham City mob boss Carmine Falcone. Reeves made the news official on Friday with another one of his not-so-cryptic tweets. Fans of Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy will remember the character was previously portrayed by Tom Wilkinson in Batman Begins while John Doman took on the role in Fox’s Gotham.
Turturro has had a long, successful career as a character actor. His accolades include an Emmy for Monk, Golden Globe nominations for Quiz Show and The Night Of. Turturro is also recognized for his collaborations with a number of acclaimed filmmakers, appearing in Spike Lee’s Do the Right Thing as well as a number of Coen Brothers projects, including The Big Lebowski and O Brother, Where Art Thou? More casual moviegoers may remember the actor from his blockbuster outings, including four of Michael Bay’s Transformers films.
Created by Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli for the classic Batman: Year One storyline in 1987, Carmine Falcone was a crime lord known as “The Roman” who’d turn out to be an inspiration to both Batman and Catwoman early in their careers. More recently, however, the mobster appeared in the Batman Eternal comics where he played a crucial role in the downfall of Gotham City.
Reeves has assembled a sprawling cast for The Batman, which will be led by Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne. Zoe Kravitz is set to play Catwoman, Paul Dano is playing Riddler and Colin Farrell is on board as the Penguin. Meanwhile, Jeffrey Wright will play Batman ally Commissioner Gordon, while Andy Serkis is appearing as his trusted butler, Alfred.
Warner Bros. is set to open The Batman on June 25, 2021.
