We’ve known for a little bit now that James Wan was planning to return to his smaller, scarier roots once he was finished with the big budget fare of Aquaman. Not much is known about The Conjuring director’s next film, other than it will be an original R-rated horror flick and that casting is currently underway. However, now it seems a little more info has come in about the project.
Bloody Disgusting has been able to confirm that Wan’s upcoming film will be a Giallo. If you are not familiar, Giallo is a very specific sub-genre of Italian horror. They often involve a murder mystery and feature slasher elements such as masker murderer and grizzly death sequences, although Giallo films pre-date American slashers. In addition to violence, Giallo films also tend to exploit obviously saturated color pallets for added dread. In fact the word “giallo” translates to “yellow.” Notable Giallo films include Blood and Black Lace, Deep Red, and Suspiria.
The currently untitled film will shoot in Los Angeles at the end of September.
