Lara Croft still has cinematic mountains to climb.
From Deadline, Oscar-winner Alicia Vikander is set to return as the iconic video game explorer in a sequel to last year’s Tomb Raider. Acclaimed Kill List and Free Fire Director Ben Wheatley is taking over directing duties. Wheatley will once again work from a script written by long-time screenwriting partner Amy Jump.
Roar Uthaug directed 2018’s Tomb Raider, which grossed $275 million at the global box office. That’s not an overwhelming success once you consider the film’s initial $94 million production budget plus marketing. Despite this, MGM plans to roll into production on the follow-up early next year with a planned release date of March 19, 2021.
