Saw just got a whole lot more interesting.
From Deadline, Samuel L. Jackson has officially signed on to play Chris Rock’s father in Twisted Pictures and Lionsgate’s forthcoming Saw reboot. Rock will play a detective investigating a series of grizzly crimes. Minghella will play William Schenk, Rock’s partner, and Nichols will play Capt. Angie Garza, Rock’s boss.
In addition his acting duties, Rock is serving as executive producer. Three-time Saw helmer Darren Lynn Bousman is directing from a script by Pete Goldfinger and Josh Stolberg, which is based on an original story idea from Rock.
The original Saw was created by James Wan and Leigh Whannell in 2004. The film went on to spawn seven sequels, including 2017’s Jigsaw, which took in nearly $103 million worldwide off a $10 production budget.
Production is now underway on the untitled Saw flick and is set to hit theaters on October 23, 2020.
This news is interesting to say the least. Hearing about Chris Rock’s initial involvement was unexpected. Throw in Samuel L. Jackson and I think you just caught the attention of a lot of moviegoers who’d otherwise have blown off the news that another Saw was on its way. Jackson is always a welcome addition to any project and Rock must have an intriguing new take on the material. This is how you keep fascination alive for an old IP.
