We got an enlightening bit of news yesterday regarding the Thomas Edison drama The Current War. It is being reported that the project has landed a new home and release date thanks to 101 studios.

According to DeadlineThe Current War will light up theaters across North America when it opens wide October 11 later this year. The film was previously slated for a Thanksgiving 2017 release by The Weinstein Company before it filed for bankruptcy and sold to Lantern Entertainment amid the Harvey Weinstein scandal.

The Current War stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Edison and Michael Shannon as his rival George Westinghouse and retells the dramatic conflict between the two electricity moguls as they go head-to-head to determine whose grid will power the future. Juding from previous marketing, the film looks like potential Oscar bait with two of the industry’s most engrossing performers going head-to-head.

Alfonso Gomez-Rejon is directing from a screenplay by playwright Michael Mitnick. Gomez-Rejon previously directed the 2014 reboot of The Town That Dreaded Sundown as well as the indie darling Me and Earl and the Dying Girl. Martin Scorsese is executive producing.

The Current War also stars Nicholas Hoult, Katherine Waterston and Tom Holland.

What do you make of The Current War finally getting a release date? Are you excited that we will finally get to see the Thomas Edison drama? I for one was looking forward to this film until The Weinstein Company went under, so this news is like music to my ears!
