Matt Reeves’ forthcoming Batman movie has been in development since the Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and Let Me In Director was brought on board to helm the project back in 2017. In that time, a lot of questions have gone unanswered. Will Ben Affleck be reprising his role in some fashion? Is the film a part of the current DCEU? Who will the villain be? While a lot of questions still cannot be satisfied, it now appears we may be able to answer that last one.
According to The Hollywood Reporter’s Heat Vision newsletter, The Batman (as it’s tentatively being referred to) will feature two primary antagonists facing off against Robert Pattinson’s Caped Crusader, the Penguin and Catwoman.
If you’re experiencing déjà vu, that’s because the Penguin and Catwoman were also the featured baddies Tim Burton’s Batman Returns (1992). Danny DeVito played the scenery-chewing Penguin, aka Oswald Cobblepot, while Michelle Pfeiffer cracked the whip as Selina Kyle, aka Catwoman.
Casting for the villainous roles is currently unknown, though there have been unconfirmed rumors that Josh Gad has been signed on to portray the Penguin. Gad himself has been adding fuel to the fiery speculation with tantalizing social media posts. Recently, the actor responded with a wink to the reports that Robert Pattinson has been tapped as Bruce Wayne/Batman. Check out Gad’s tweet:
If you’re one of the people bummed about this news because you wanted to see fresher faces from Batman’s iconic rogues gallery grace the big screen, there may still be some good news for you. Although unconfirmed, there have been reports that Matt Reeves has written as many as half a dozen villainous into his The Batman script. If it’s true, chances are we’ll get a sampling of some criminals we’ve never met before, even if the Penguin and Catwoman are the focus this time out.
What do you make of this news? Are you bummed that The Batman may focus more on the Penguin and Catwoman? Are there other villains you were hoping to see make it to the movies this time out? Or are you, like me, just happy we’re getting another Batman movie with so many talented names attached? Jump down to the comments section below and let me know your thoughts!
