The Marvel universe is about to spread like wildfire. Actually, hellfire to be more precise.
According to Variety, Hulu is developing live-action shows based on the Ghost Rider and Helstrom comic book characters from Marvel. Gabriel Luna is returning as Ghost Rider, aka Robbie Reyes, a role he previously played in Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.LD. on ABC. However, the site stresses that this will be a new iteration of Ghost Rider and will in no way be connected to the ABC show.
The series will be executive produced by Ingrid Escajeda, who will serve as showrunner, Paul Zbyszewski and Jeph Loeb.
The site breaks down Ghost Rider:
“Ghost Rider, also known as Robbie Reyes, is consumed by hellfire and supernaturally bound to a demon. He lives on the Texas/Mexico border and when he unleashes the Rider, Robbie brings vengeance for the innocents he encounters, but struggles to control the power he wields.”
Helstrom similarly explores the demonic, as Deadline describes:
“In Helstrom, Daimon and Ana Helstrom are the son and daughter of a mysterious and powerful serial killer. The siblings have a complicated dynamic as they track down the terrorizing worst of humanity — each with their attitude and skills.”
This announcement comes as Disney takes the majority control of Hulu after buying Fox’s stakes in the streaming company. The Mouse House has already made it clear that Disney+ will a family-friendly service, so it makes sense that they would need a place to put their more adult-oriented content. What’s more is that Disney is reportedly in negotiations with AT&T to acquire their stake in Hulu. If these reports are true and the purchase goes through, Disney will then possess 90% of the service’s shares.
Both Ghost Rider and Helstrom are set to hit Hulu sometime in 2020.
