It appears that Deadshot will not be in James Gunn’s Suicide Squad after all.
Though it was reported that Idris Elba would be taking over the role for Will Smith in Gunn’s new vision for the franchise, it seems Warner Bros. and Gunn have decided to move on from the character altogether. Elba is still attached to the project. Variety is reporting that he will instead play another character.
According to the outlet, everyone involved with the decision agreed that putting Elba in a different role rather than have him simply replace Smith as Deadshot was the way to go out of respect for the Fresh Prince, seeing is how Smith couldn’t return due to scheduling conflicts and not creative differences.
It’s not yet know which new character from the DC Comics Idris Elba will be portraying.
With this development, it now appears that Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn, Jai Courtney’s Captain Boomerang, and Viola Davis‘ Amanda Waller will be the only ones reprising their roles from the David Ayers’ 2016 film.
James Gunn’s Suicide Squad hits theaters on August 6th, 2021.
