From Deadline:

Law & Order: SVU and star Mariska Hargitay have made television history.

NBC recently renewed Dick Wolf’s crime drama for a record-setting 21st season, making it now the longest-running primetime television series in history. It surpasses the benchmark of 20 seasons, held consecutively by its mothership show Law & Order (1990-2010) and Gunsmoke (1955-75).

Respectively, the renewal also means Hargitay’s Lt. Benson is now the longest-running character in a primetime live-action series. Even the original Law & Order went through major cast change-ups later in its lifespan. Hargitay has been at the center of SVU since its pilot episode.

Deadline is also reporting that there are still more records for SVU to break. The outlet has reportedly spoken with individuals close to the show who say that the network currently has no plans to make the upcoming 21st season its last.

What do you think about this record-setting renewal? Are you at all surprised that Law & Order: SVU continues to pull in strong ratings? Or were you never interested in the show in the first place? Sound off in the comments below and let me know!
