In more musical biopic news, Tom Hanks is currently in talks to play Colonel Tom Parker, the man who discovered Elvis Presley in a film about the legendary performer.
Per Variety, Baz Luhrmann is set to direct the picture from a script he co-wrote with frequent collaborator Craig Pearce. The duo previously worked together on Moulin Rouge!, Romeo + Juliet and The Great Gatsby.
According to the report, Luhrmann always envisioned a star in the role of Tom Parker, but is looking to cast an unknown in the role of Presley. The director has already begun meeting with potential talents.
The budget is still reportedly being worked out; however, it is said that the casting of Hanks will give the studio the confidence to move forward with the project. Luhrmann hopes to begin principal photography later this year.
Of course, Tom Hanks has a long, successful history of portraying real-life figures in film. He did so in Captain Philips, Apollo 13, Sully, Saving Mr. Banks, and more recently in The Post. Looking forward, Hanks will take on the role of beloved television personality Mister Rogers in the film A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood.
