“An oldie but a goodie.”
The phrase applies both to the long-running Mission: Impossible film franchise as well as its seemingly ageless star, Tom Cruise. At 56 years young not only is Cruise now five years older than Wilford Brimley was in Cocoon (a movie about old people), but he’s still topping the box office and setting records with his flagship action franchise… And doing most of his own death-defying stunts to boot!
That’s right, Mission: Impossible–Fallout capped off the box office this past weekend with $61.6 million. That’s a series best for a three-day weekend, topping the previous record of $57.8 million set by Mission: Impossible II back in 2000. It was also the second-best opening for a Tom Cruise vehicle overall, falling behind 2005’s War of the Worlds, which bowed with $64.8 million. Not bad for the sixth film in a 22 year-old franchise, huh?
The much-anticipated sequel/prequel hybrid Mama Mia! Here We Go Again dropped down to second place in its second week with $15.1 million. The ABBA musical’s total domestic haul now stands over $70 million.
The Equalizer 2, which topped the box office last weekend, fell to third place, bringing in $14.1 million. Not too surprising as it obviously lost a large chunk of its audience to MI6. In all, the film’s domestic cume is aiming in on $65 million.
Sony Animation stayed in the game this weekend with Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation, which scared up an extra $12.4 million in North America. The Adam Sandler-starring sequel now stands over $120 million domestically.
Rounding out the top five is WB’s feature translation of the popular Teen Titans GO! television series, cleverly titled Teen Titans GO! to the Movies, which debuted at $10.6 million domestically. Though those aren’t the numbers Warner Bros. were hoping to see from their feature adaption, the reported $10 million budget helps the medicine go down.
