Despite many predictions, nothing could demote The Boss Baby in its second week. Dreamworks’ animated hit rattled the box office competition with an additional $26.3 haul. Both times the family flick managed to stave off Disney’s juggernaut Beauty and the Beast, which still scared up $23.6 million in its fourth week, on its way to crossing the $1 billion bench.

Many predicted Smurfs: The Lost Village to find its way to the number one spot this weekend and to stake its claim as the dominate family friendly film; however, it landed at number three instead with $13.2 million. I think it’s fair to say that “Smurf fatigue” may be setting in.

Meanwhile, Zach Braff’s latest, Going in Style (a remake from 1979), over performed. The heist comedy (our review here) got away with nearly $12 million after initial reports had it tracking at an $8 million opening. It’ll be interesting to see how far its legs can take it in the coming weeks.

Rounding out the top five this weekend is the Paramount bomb Ghost in the Shell (our review here). The film fell more than 60% in its second week to just over $7 million. Paramount has recently come out saying they believe the whitewashing controversy surrounding the sci-fi crime drama negatively impacted the film’s overall performance.
